How extraordinary to go to all that effort to grow so big only to flower once and die! This reminded me of the banana palms we have in our garden. They do similar. A trunk flowers once, fruits and dies. Then a new trunk grows.
I don't think we have this palm in NZ. I had a quick search but couldn't find a reference to it.
Yes, Susan, it's nice to be able to discover a Talipot Palm (Corypha umbraculifera) - especially when it's flowering.
They now have to be intentionally planted. And they don't do well if temps can dip to below 35F/1.7C. If your area gets there often enough, it would be difficult for it to survive. They're very sensitive to cold.
I know they grow in Australia, but haven't looked at the locales - for sure in Queensland & NT. I also, on my limited research, haven't noted any in NZ. But maybe someone has seen one somewhere there!
